Fast boat in Indonesia: what it means
You see the term on every island itinerary and want to know what you are boarding.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
A fast boat is a high-speed passenger boat that links Bali with nearby islands such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, the Gili Islands and Lombok [1]. Islands without a commercial airport rely on these boats, so the word appears in nearly every island itinerary. It is a different thing from the slower public ferry, which our speedboat vs ferry entry explains.
Where do Malaysians meet the term?
On island add-ons. A Bali plan with a Nusa Penida day trip or a night on the Gili Islands will list a fast boat leg, sometimes with a hotel pickup.
The boat is one short line on the page, yet it sets your wake-up time. The departure pier and the sea decide how the rest of the day runs.
How long does the crossing take?
It depends on the pier and the island. Bali to Nusa Penida takes 25 to 45 minutes, and Bali to Gili Trawangan takes 1.5 to 3.5 hours, with Padang Bai giving the shorter route to the Gilis [2].
Our Padang Bai to the Gilis guide compares the piers. The Sanur side is covered in the Nusa Penida fast boat guide.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If a Nusa Penida or Gili day sits inside your Bali plan, send us your dates and who is travelling. We can check the crossing against your flights and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one. What should you check before the day?
- Ask whether the operator is licensed.
- Ask whether hotel transfers and flexible rebooking come with the ticket.
- Confirm the harbour departure fee, listed at IDR (Indonesian rupiah) 10,000 to 20,000 per person [3].
- Check baggage handling: bags are tagged and stowed inside or on the roof under a tarp, and boarding at the Gilis can mean wading through shallow water [4].
Pack a dry bag for phones and passports, and wear shoes you can take off quickly.
What happens in rough weather?
Captains watch the sea and may delay or cancel a departure, and December to March brings rougher seas, so the guide advises morning crossings [5]. Keep a buffer before any international flight.
Our guide to ferry and fast boat cancellations lists what to ask the operator. Share your flight times with the agency so the crossing is placed with room to spare.
Keep planning

- The Gili islands, planned for MalaysiansYou picture a car-free island day, but the boat times decide whether it works.
- Nusa Penida: day trip or stay? You have seen the cliff photos and want to know whether the boat and roads suit your family.
- Bali, planned for Malaysian travellersYou have limited leave, a family to keep happy and one island everyone keeps recommending.
- Adisutjipto or YIA: which airport do flights use?Your booking names an airport you half remember, and you want to be sure where you land.
- Are the Gili islands worth the effort? You have a few days of leave and wonder if one more boat is worth it.
Questions Malaysians ask
Is a fast boat the same as a ferry?
No. A fast boat is a smaller, quicker passenger boat sold by tourism operators, while a ferry is a larger vessel that carries cars, trucks and local passengers. The choice changes your time, pier and comfort. Read the speedboat vs ferry entry, then ask which operator your itinerary uses.
What if I get seasick on a fast boat?
The strait between Bali and Lombok can be rough in the rainy season, so seasickness tablets and an early departure help. Sit in the middle or towards the back for more airflow. Tell the agency about children or grandparents so the pier and crossing time suit them.
Will the boat still run in bad weather?
Captains may delay or cancel a departure when sea conditions look poor. Keep a buffer day before an international flight and never plan a tight connection straight after a crossing. Ask the operator what they offer if a crossing is cancelled, and check the refund terms before you pay.
