What a private driver will and will not do

You picture a helpful driver, but nobody has said where the job starts and ends.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

A private driver takes you between places in the vehicle and knows the local roads. The role normally includes help with bags, patient waiting and sensible advice on stops. Other tasks, such as shopping errands or detailed history tours, sit with a guide or a separate service.

Agree the role in writing before the day, so you and the driver share the same picture. That one step prevents awkward moments.

What does a driver cover?

Agencies set their own terms, so use this as a starting list and confirm each line.

  • Collecting you on time at the agreed place and returning you at the end.
  • Driving the agreed route with a clean, working vehicle.
  • Helping with bags at the car and the hotel entrance.
  • Waiting while you visit sites, within the agreed hours.
  • Suggesting meal, toilet and photo stops along the route.
  • Adjusting the order of stops when traffic or weather changes the plan.

Ask the agency to confirm these items in your booking message.

What falls outside the role?

Request Where it belongs What to do
Detailed history or temple commentary A guide Ask for driver plus guide
Carrying heavy luggage up steps A hotel porter Ask the hotel to help
Buying items or running errands Outside the driver day Agree it first, as a favour or a fee
Long detours to another region A new quote Ask the agency to adjust the plan
Driving beyond the agreed hours Overtime Agree the rate before the day
Medical or legal help Emergency services or your insurer Know the numbers before you travel

The aim is a clear relationship, not a list of refusals. Where a request falls outside the role, a quick word to the agency turns it into an arrangement.

Which questions go to the agency?

  1. Which tasks are part of the driver’s role on my itinerary?
  2. Does the driver help with bags, and is there a limit?
  3. How long can the driver wait at each stop?
  4. Can the route change on the day, and who approves it?
  5. Does the driver speak English or Malay?
  6. Is a guide needed for the sites I have chosen?
  7. How do overtime and extra stops work?
  8. What is the plan if the driver is unwell or the vehicle breaks down?

Our driver day guide explains how the hours are counted, and the package inclusion comparator helps you line up two quotes.

How do I decide between a driver and a driver plus guide?

If your group wants stories behind each site, a guide adds more than any amount of driving skill. If you mainly want comfortable transport, a driver alone suits. Our guide on driver only or driver plus guide walks through the choice.

Questions Malaysians ask

Will the driver carry our luggage?

Drivers can help load and unload bags at the hotel and car, but confirm it when you book. Heavy items, a large pile of bags or hotel steps may need a porter. Mention older parents or young children in your message so the driver can plan to give extra help.

Can the driver wait while we visit a site?

Waiting is part of a driver day, within the agreed hours. Ask how long the driver can wait at each stop and whether waiting counts toward overtime. Agree a meeting point and a time, and share contact numbers in case you are delayed.

Is the driver also a guide?

A driver knows the roads and may share local tips, but a guide explains history and culture in depth. If you want that, ask for a driver plus guide. Be clear at booking about whether you need commentary, language help or only transport.

Can we ask the driver to change the route on the day?

Small changes are fine, within the hours and the car's condition. Ask politely and explain the reason. Large changes, such as a new region, need the agency's approval, because they affect distance, hours and cost.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
