Silangit airport to Lake Toba and Samosir: transfer legs
You are travelling with parents and want the shortest calm route from the plane to the lake.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Landing at Silangit puts you in the Toba highlands, but you are still some distance from the water. The airport is about 76 km by road from Parapat [1], so plan the transfer as a proper drive, then a boat if you are heading to Samosir.
This guide breaks the transfer into legs and shows where to protect older travellers. For the airport choice itself, see Kualanamu vs Silangit.
What are the legs from the plane to your bed?
There are three parts, and the last depends on where you sleep.
| Leg | What happens | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival hall to car | Baggage, meeting the driver | Meeting point, flight number shared |
| Road to the lake | Highland drive to the shore | Rest stops, expected arrival |
| Boat to Samosir | Crossing from the mainland | Last boat time, luggage handling |
If you sleep on the mainland shore, the third leg disappears. See our Lake Toba overview and Samosir overview for the two bases.
How do you protect older travellers?
Put the hardest leg early in the day when energy is high. Plan a rest stop partway, with a toilet and a seat. Keep water and any medicine within reach in the car, not in the boot.
A first night on the mainland shore removes the boat with bags on arrival day. Read staying on Samosir vs near the mainland lake shore to compare the two.
What about the last boat?
The last boat to the island sets a hard deadline for your arrival day. If the flight lands late or the road is slow, you may miss it. Ask the agency for the cut-off, then plan the pick-up time backwards from it.
Our guide to the Parapat to Tuk Tuk ferry and last boat explains the logic. Keep a mainland bed as a fallback so a late day does not cost you the night.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you are bringing parents or grandparents, send us your flight, ages and preferred base. We can look at the road and boat legs with you and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.Which side of the lake is closest?
Silangit sits nearer the northern and southern shore than the Parapat side. Our guide to north Toba shore, Balige and Silangit-side stays shows what the closer shore offers, if you want a shorter drive on the day you land.
What should you ask before you book?
- What is the planned drive time, and where are the stops?
- Which jetty do we use, and what is the last boat?
- Is the vehicle comfortable for older passengers?
- What is the plan if the flight lands late?
- Does the quote include luggage help at the jetty?
When is another route better?
If the flight schedule to Silangit does not suit you, the longer road from Medan is an option. Compare both quotes on the same dates before you decide. See also our wider look at domestic access routes.

Questions Malaysians ask
How far is Silangit airport from Parapat?
The road distance is about 76 km, which is a real drive rather than a hop. Travel time depends on the road and your pick-up point, so ask your driver for a current estimate and add a rest stop.
Can I reach Samosir the same day I land?
It can work if the flight lands early enough, but the last boat to the island sets the deadline. Confirm the boat time with the agency before you fix the pick-up, and keep a mainland bed as a fallback.
Is it better to stay on the mainland first?
For older travellers, a first night on the mainland shore removes a boat with luggage on arrival day. You can cross to Samosir the next morning, rested and unhurried.
What should I tell the driver about my group?
Share ages, mobility needs, luggage count and flight number. Ask for a vehicle with easy step height and a plan for rest stops, so the road feels gentler for parents.
