Istana Maimun and a Medan heritage walk
You have a few hours in Medan and want to see its royal and colonial past on foot.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
Istana Maimun is Medan’s best-known royal building and a good first heritage stop. It pairs naturally with the Great Mosque, which sits close by. Give it an hour or so, wear modest clothes and confirm the current fee on the day.
This page belongs to our attractions and cultural places hub. For the city as a whole, read the Medan destination page.
What is Istana Maimun?
The palace was built between 1888 and 1891 for the Sultan of Deli [1]. It mixes Malay, Mughal-style and European touches, which feels familiar to Malaysian visitors used to Malay palace design. Today it works as a museum and still carries the sultanate’s ceremonial role.
Inside, the main hall holds a throne, family portraits and period furniture. The garden and the exterior give the best photographs.
How long does a visit take?
Plan an hour at the palace, or more if you wander slowly. A walk to the nearby mosque adds a short stretch, and a coffee stop afterwards turns it into a relaxed half-morning. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.
If you only have one day in the city, see our guide to a Medan city day before a flight.
Who is this stop best suited to?
| Traveller | Why it works | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Heritage lovers | Royal and colonial history in one place | Displays are modest |
| Families | Short and easy to follow | Heat and traffic tire children |
| Grandparents | Flat ground floor | Steps at the entrance |
| Photographers | Colourful interiors and gardens | Costume photos cost extra |

Guides disagree on the fee and opening hours, and we found no official page that settles it. Ask your driver or hotel before you set out, and carry small rupiah notes. Treat any posted price as the one that counts.
Restoration and ceremonies can close rooms without notice, so keep this stop flexible.
How do you build a heritage walk around it?
Start at the palace, then visit the Great Mosque of Medan, and finish with the Tjong A Fie Mansion in the afternoon. The three together make a calm half-day for people who like history. Use a driver or taxi between them instead of walking in midday heat.

Where should you stay?
A hotel near the old centre shortens the transfers. See our guide to Medan hotel areas for a short stay for how to choose. Landing at Kualanamu? The airport to city options guide helps you plan the first hours.

Questions Malaysians ask
Is Istana Maimun worth visiting?
It is worth a short visit if you enjoy colonial-era architecture and royal history. The ground floor is the main attraction, so expect a compact visit rather than a grand museum. Pair it with the Great Mosque next door.
What are the opening hours and fees?
Guides give different figures and none is official, so confirm on the day. Expect a modest entrance fee, a small charge for photos in royal costume and a donation-style tip for any guide who helps.
What should I wear?
Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and be ready to remove your shoes at the entrance. This also suits the nearby mosque. Light clothing helps in Medan's heat.
Can I walk between the sights?
The palace and the Great Mosque are close enough to walk, but heat and traffic make a short taxi or driver hop easier. Further heritage buildings are better reached by car than on foot.
