Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan or Mawun?

You are staying near Kuta and want the right beach for a quiet, easy day by the sea.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Choose Tanjung Aan for calm swimming, Selong Belanak for a big bay with food stalls, and Mawun for a quiet, scenic stop. All three sit within a short drive of Kuta Lombok. One beach a day keeps the trip relaxed.

How far apart are the three beaches?

Tanjung Aan is about 15 minutes by motorbike from Kuta, and Mawun lies between Selong Belanak and Kuta [1]. Selong Belanak is the furthest west of the three. By car, treat each beach as a half-day, not a quick stop.

Roads are narrow in places, and the last stretch to some beaches can be rough. Ask your driver how the road is on the day you go.

Which beach suits which traveller?

Beach Best suited to Worth knowing
Tanjung Aan Swimmers, snorkellers, photographers Calm and shallow water, little shade at midday
Selong Belanak Families, first-timers, learner surfers Wide bay, stalls and chairs, busy on Sundays and holidays
Mawun Couples, quiet seekers Scenic and calm, fewer facilities

If you want a lively sunset with food, pick Selong Belanak. If you want to switch off with a book, Mawun is the better match.

Which one for a quiet couple’s day?

Go to Mawun in the morning, have lunch nearby and move to Tanjung Aan for late afternoon light. That order gives you empty sand first and shallow, calm water after the sun has moved. Keep a short drive between the two and avoid weekends.

Which one for families and grandparents?

Selong Belanak is the easier choice, with a gently sloping beach and places to sit and eat. Bring sun cover, because shade is limited. Ask your driver to wait close by so grandparents can rest in the car.

Tanjung Aan suits families with confident swimmers. Shallow water is gentle, but keep a close eye on children near the edges.

What should you plan around the beaches?

Take water, a hat and small rupiah notes for stalls. Tides and wind change the feel of each beach, so check the day with your hotel. Wet-season afternoons can bring rain, which makes a morning beach plan safer.

A village stop on the way is easy to add, and our Sade etiquette guide explains how to do it respectfully. Use the region chooser if you are still deciding whether the south of Lombok matches your group.

How does a beach day fit your base?

Staying in Kuta Lombok makes all three beaches easy. If you are based on the west coast, the south is a long day, so ask a driver for times first. Our Lombok destination page shows how the regions fit together.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which south Lombok beach is best for swimming?

Tanjung Aan is described as calm and shallow, which suits swimming and snorkelling. Selong Belanak has a wide, gently sloping bay that also works for swimming. Check the sea state on the day with your driver or hotel.

Which beach is the quietest?

Mawun is the quieter of the three on most weekdays, while Selong Belanak fills up on Sundays and holidays. Go early, and avoid school-holiday weekends if you want empty sand.

Can I visit all three in one day?

It is possible by car, but you would spend most of the day in transit and lose the point of a beach day. Pick one for the morning and one for the late afternoon at most, with lunch in between.

Are there facilities for families?

Selong Belanak has the most food stalls and sun-bed options, while Mawun and Tanjung Aan have fewer. Bring water, sun cover and snacks, and ask your driver to wait close by if grandparents are with you.
