Harbour Bay vs Sekupang vs Batam Centre

You are about to book a short Batam break and the terminal name on the ticket matters.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Choose the ferry terminal that lands nearest your hotel, then work backwards to the departure that fits your leave. Batam has five ferry terminals, including Harbour Bay, Sekupang and Batam Center [1]. Ferries link the island to Singapore, Bintan and Johor Bahru, and the Singapore sailings use HarbourFront Centre and Tanah Merah [2].

If you are still deciding on the break itself, start with our Batam guide. Then use this page to pick a terminal with confidence.

Why does the terminal matter so much?

A ticket that lands on the wrong side of the island turns a short break into a long taxi ride. The terminal decides how far you travel to the hotel, how crowded the arrival hall feels and how easy the return becomes. A short break has little spare time, so a few wasted hours matter.

Choose the hotel first, check its address on a map, then match the terminal to it. Our Batam Centre vs Nagoya vs Nongsa guide helps with the first step.

How do the three terminals compare?

The table uses one assumption: a small group, one hotel base and a two-night stay. Adjust it to your group once you have a hotel in mind.

Terminal Best suited to Ask before booking
Harbour Bay Groups whose hotel or plans sit closest to this terminal How far is the hotel, and which operators land here?
Sekupang Groups whose hotel or onward road plans start from this terminal How will you reach the hotel, and is the onward ride included?
Batam Centre Groups whose hotel, malls or meetings sit near this terminal Does the hotel sit near the terminal, or across town?

None of the three suits every group. The right terminal follows the hotel, and the hotel follows what your group wants to do.

Who should pick which terminal?

Pick Harbour Bay, Sekupang or Batam Centre by one test: which terminal sits closest to the hotel you have chosen. Look up the hotel’s address and each terminal on a map, then ask the hotel to confirm the drive. A group that wants malls and meals within reach should still let the hotel’s location decide.

Better options when none of these fit your hotel: Nongsapura and Waterfront City also appear on the list of terminals [1]. Resorts on the eastern side may be easier from a different terminal, so ask the resort which one it recommends.

What does arrival look like for a family?

Families should plan the first hour carefully. After the crossing you queue at immigration, collect bags and look for a taxi or your pre-booked pickup. Taxis are available at the terminals and the airport [3], but a named driver with a WhatsApp number avoids bargaining while children are tired.

What should you ask the agency or the hotel?

Put these questions in writing so you can check the answers later.

  • Which terminal does the booked sailing land at, and which terminal does the return use?
  • How far is the hotel from that terminal, and what will the transfer cost?
  • Is the transfer included in the package, or do you arrange it yourself?
  • What happens to the pickup if the ferry arrives late?
  • Where do you meet the driver, and what is his WhatsApp number?

The Trans Batam bus system includes a Sekupang to Batam Centre corridor [3], though a bus with luggage is a weaker fit for families with young children. Treat it as a back-up, not the plan.

What if you start from Johor or from Singapore?

Johor and Singapore feed into Batam from different ports, and the terminal on your ticket depends on the operator. If you start from Johor, compare the departure points in Stulang Laut vs Puteri Harbour. If you live in Singapore, our Singapore gateways guide covers HarbourFront and Tanah Merah.

Use the ferry vs flight planner if you are weighing a flight into Hang Nadim instead.

How do you weigh time, cost and comfort?

Cheaper tickets sometimes land you farther from the hotel, and a long taxi ride can erase the saving. Compare the whole journey, not only the ticket. Add the transfer, the waiting time and the energy it takes to move tired children.

Group type changes the answer. A couple on a spa weekend can accept a longer ride if the hotel is a quiet retreat.

A family with a stroller and grandparents should pay for the shortest arrival, because the first hour sets the mood for the whole trip. A group of friends who plan to shop can sit nearer the malls and move on foot.

Write your priority at the top of your brief, whether it is price, comfort or time. The agency can then price the options on the same basis.

What is the fallback if the plan slips?

Agree a fallback before you leave. If the sailing is delayed, keep your first evening open and let the hotel know.

If the terminal differs from what you expected, ask the hotel whether to take a taxi or wait for a driver. If the weather cancels the ferry, contact the operator first and then your agency about rebooking.

The calmest short breaks start with one hotel, one terminal and one pickup arranged in writing. Everything else can stay flexible.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which Batam ferry terminal is best for a first-timer?

The best terminal is the one closest to your hotel on the day you arrive. A first-timer should choose the sailing that lands nearest the hotel and ask the hotel to confirm the transfer, rather than choosing by the cheapest ticket.

Can I change terminal on the way back?

A return ticket can be tied to a specific operator and terminal, so check the ticket before you assume you can switch. If your plans change, ask the operator or your agency before you travel.

Is Batam Centre the same as the city centre?

Batam Centre is the name of a ferry terminal and a district, and it does not mean every hotel is close. Look at the hotel's address on a map and ask how far it is from the terminal on your ticket.

Do I need to pre-book a transfer from the terminal?

Taxis wait at the terminals, but a pre-booked pickup removes bargaining after a crossing, especially with children or a late arrival. Ask the hotel for a named driver and a WhatsApp contact.

What if the ferry is cancelled or delayed?

Weather and operator timetables can change a sailing. Keep a flexible first evening, save the operator's contact, and ask the agency or hotel what happens to your transfer if the arrival moves.

Can I go from Johor and from Singapore to the same terminal?

Both routes feed into Batam, but the terminal on your ticket depends on the operator and the departure point. Check each leg separately rather than assuming one terminal serves both.
