Getting between Bali and Lombok: questions to compare

You want both islands on one trip and need to pick between a flight and a boat.

IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026

Bali and Lombok sit close together, but the way you cross decides how smooth the day feels. A flight, the public ferry and a fast boat each trade speed, comfort and risk differently.

This guide gives you the questions to compare, so a quote tells you more than a price. It belongs to our wider look at domestic access routes.

What are your options for the crossing?

There are three main ways, and each starts and ends in a different place.

Option Suits Watch out for
Flight Travellers with checked bags, tight schedules Airport time at both ends, baggage rules
Public ferry Flexible travellers who like a slow crossing Long port waits, road legs either side
Fast boat Those heading to the Gili islands or the coast Sea conditions, jetty steps, luggage limits

Our guide to the public ferry from Padangbai to Lembar explains the slower option in detail.

How do you compare door to door?

Count from your hotel door to your next hotel door. A short crossing can still make a long day once you add the drive to the port, check-in, waiting and the drive from the other side.

The ferry versus flight door-to-door guide walks through this with the same assumptions for each mode. You can also test your own plan with the ferry vs flight planner.

What should you ask each provider?

Put these questions to any agency or boat operator:

  1. Where exactly do we start and finish, and who meets us?
  2. What is the check-in or cut-off time?
  3. How is luggage handled, and are there limits?
  4. What happens if the sea is rough or the flight is delayed?
  5. Is the next transfer on Lombok included, and who is waiting at arrival?

Written answers matter more than verbal promises, so ask for the plan in a WhatsApp message.

Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?

If you cannot decide between a flight and a boat, send us your dates and who is travelling. We can look at the timing with you and pass your brief to a licensed agency for a quote.

You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one.

When does adding Lombok make sense?

Adding Lombok suits travellers with enough days to avoid a rushed move. If you only have a short break, one island done well can beat two done quickly. Read should you combine Bali and Lombok on a short trip before you commit.

What about the return home?

If you fly out of Bali or Lombok on an international flight, build in a spare buffer after any sea crossing. A boat that runs late can cost you a connection, so a morning crossing the day before is safer than a same-day dash.

Ask the agency to show the whole chain from the last night to the airport gate, and compare that against a plan where you fly the short hop instead. Choose the one that leaves a calm margin.

Which island should come first?

Start with the island where your energy is highest and the harder day is not on arrival. See the Lombok overview and the Bali overview to decide where you want the quiet days.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is it easy to go from Bali to Lombok?

Yes, it is a common hop, but each option asks something different of you. A flight is short in the air yet needs airport time on both ends. A boat avoids airports but adds road legs to the port. Compare door to door, not just the crossing.

Which is better for families with luggage?

Families with large bags may find a flight with checked luggage simpler, while a boat suits those who like to travel light. Ask each provider about luggage handling, stairs at the jetty and how children board.

Can sea conditions cancel a boat?

Yes. Rough seas can delay or cancel crossings, so keep a spare day or a flight as a fallback before an international flight home. Ask the provider how changes are communicated and what happens to your booking.

Should I book the Bali to Lombok leg myself?

You can, but a licensed agency can bundle the transfer to the port or airport with the crossing and take the timing risk off your shoulders. Ask for each leg to be listed with pick-up times.

Entry rules, ferry times and prices change. Check the official source or your licensed agency before you book.
