Berastagi to Samosir: route options
You are in the highlands with a driver and want to reach the lake before dark.
IndonesiaQuest Editorial · Updated 20 October 2026
There are two sensible ways to go from Berastagi to Samosir: round the northern side of Lake Toba by road, or drop south to Parapat and take the ferry. The northern road is the shorter idea on a map, and the southern road is the better-known one with a clear ferry cut-off. Pick by how much daylight you have and how your group handles winding roads.
This guide is part of our domestic access routes hub. Read it alongside the Medan to Berastagi road leg if you are coming from the airport side.
What are the two routes?
Northern route. From the highlands you head toward Kabanjahe and then to Merek on the northern side of the lake. The Kabanjahe road is described as the shortest car route from Medan to Merek, at about 2.5 hours from Medan [1]. From there you continue around the lake to reach the island by road.
Southern route. You drive down through Pematangsiantar to Parapat, then cross to Samosir by ferry. The larger ferry between Ajibata, near Parapat, and Tomok takes about 1 hour [2]. This route adds driving but gives you a fixed boat leg that is easy to plan around.
Next step: ask your driver which road is in better condition on your travel day, since mountain roads can change after rain.
Which route suits which group?
| Situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Early start, comfortable with bends | Northern route | Less backtracking from the highlands |
| Elderly parents or children prone to car sickness | Southern route | Wider main road and a rest at the ferry |
| Staying at Tuk Tuk or Tomok | Southern route | The ferry lands near those areas |
| Staying on the Pangururan side | Northern route | You arrive near the hot springs side |
| Travelling after a long flight | Southern route | Predictable stops and a clear last boat |
If your hotel is on the Tuk Tuk side, our Tuk Tuk stay guide shows what to expect on arrival.
How much buffer should you build in?
Add a buffer to every leg, because mountain traffic, trucks and roadworks are normal here. Treat the ferry as the fixed point in your day and work backwards from the last crossing your driver confirms. Do not plan to arrive at the pier at the last minute with luggage and children.
Give yourself a meal stop, a fuel stop and a toilet stop, and expect the group to want one more break than planned. On the southern route, the Parapat side has food options if the group arrives hungry.
Next step: write down the last ferry time, subtract the drive plus a generous cushion, and use that as your departure time from Berastagi.
Want a second pair of eyes on your plan?
If you are travelling with a private driver and a fixed number of days, send us your start point and hotel on Samosir. We will take a second look at the route and, with your consent, pass the brief to a licensed agency for a quote.
You get a reply from a person who reads your plan, plus a quote from a licensed Malaysian agency if you want one. What is the fallback if you run late?
The simplest fallback is a night near the ferry on the mainland shore, then a morning crossing. It costs one extra night but removes the stress of racing the boat. If you are on the northern route and the light is fading, consider stopping at a lakeside town instead of pushing on in the dark.
Keep your first Samosir night flexible with the hotel. A property that knows you may arrive late can hold your room and keep dinner ready. Our Berastagi overnight guide covers the case where you break the journey in the highlands instead.
Does the island itself add time?
Yes. Roads on Samosir are narrower and slower than the main highway, and public transport is limited. Plan the final hotel transfer as its own leg rather than assuming it is a few minutes from the pier. Read Samosir island roads and getting around before you finalise the plan.
Once you are settled, our Samosir destination page helps you choose what to visit first.
What should you confirm with the driver?
- The route for your day, north or south, and why.
- The ferry timetable and the vehicle crossing arrangement.
- Where the first rest stop will be.
- A phone number for the hotel on Samosir.
- A fallback place to sleep on the mainland.
Print or save these details on your phone before you leave the hotel in Berastagi.

Questions Malaysians ask
Which is faster from Berastagi to Samosir, north or south?
The northern side of the lake is closer to Berastagi on the map, so it can save driving time. The southern route through Siantar and Parapat is better known and has a clear ferry crossing. Ask your driver which road is open and how the surface is that day.
Can a car go onto Samosir?
A car can cross on the larger ferry from the Parapat side, and the northern route reaches the island by road. Confirm the vehicle size and the ferry timetable with your driver before you set out, because schedules change.
Should I leave Berastagi in the morning or afternoon?
Leave in the morning. Mountain roads are slower than they look, and a late departure puts you at the lake in the dark. A morning start leaves room for a fruit-market stop and an unhurried ferry.
What if we reach the lake too late?
Sleep on the mainland shore near the ferry and cross the next morning. This costs one night but removes the pressure of a last-boat dash. Your driver or agency can hold a room there as a fallback.
